Services to Support Carers

For carers in Torbay, many services are ‘Universal Services’ which any carer can access without needing an assessment. You can find in more detail about all of these services on our web pages, and the associated leaflets. We would always suggest that you see a Carer Support Worker at your Doctor’s surgery or at Carers Aid Torbay, or as a minimum call Signposts for Carers on 01803 666620.

Many local businesses offer discounts to Carers with your Carers Card. Follow this link to our ‘Finance ‘ page and see ‘section … ‘ . Many tourist attractions also provide free or discounted entry to Carers when accompanying the person they care for.

Please see below information on the Carers Passport for the following industries.

Torbay Hospital

Community Hospitals

The Trust’s Community Hospitals also recognise the Carers’ Passport.

At Newton Abbot and Totnes, place your Carers Card on the dashboard when visiting or supporting the person you care for, and you can park for free.

If you are supporting an in-patient, ask staff about their support to carers including the ‘orange lanyard’ which will identify you as a Carer to staff, and the ‘Carers sticker’ to go on patient notes to let them know to involve you in discussions about care and support planning.

Pharmacies

All GPs and Pharmacies offer free flu jabs for Carers, if you care for someone who would be at risk if you got flu. Please show them your carers card and make sure they log you as a Carer. Well pharmacy workers have also had Carer Awareness training, so will be able to answer basic Carers questions or link you into other Carers’ support. Poster

GP Surgeries

All GP practices in Torbay provide support to Carers. They all have a Carer Support Worker who will offer support to any Carer. Some also enable Carers to have priority access to appointments or to home visits if they cannot leave the person they care for. Contact your own practice to see what they offer.
